I heard live.com and live.co.uk are microsoft email addresses, so wondered if i can use my standard hotmail messenger program to talk to people that are using one, even if i connect to it using a hotmail address?

Yep. So long they are Windows Live IDs, they're fine. Its surprising to know that some external emails are also supported by Windows Live, for example 126.com. However, someone@microsoft.com doesn't work (I've got an account with that domain when there was a glitch with the sign up process), even though its a valid Windows Live ID. And FYI, live.com is a hotmail address. You can sign up for it at hotmail.com too.
